Guest lecture by Maryam Ashrafi – an award-winning Iranian photojournalist

Department of Digital Communications and Public Relations and Graphic Design and Multimedia hosted Maryam Ashrafi, an award-winning Iranian photojournalist based in Paris. She spoke to students about the power of photography in storytelling, drawing on her own professional experience.

Maryam Ashrafi holds a BA in Social Documentary Photography from the University of Wales, Newport (UK). Over the years, her work has explored a wide range of subjects, including refugees in Paris, the mobilization of Kurdish and Iranian diasporas, the Indignants Movement, and various protests in Paris linked to social and political movements around the world.

She is the author of the book Rising Among Ruins, Dancing Amid Bullets, published with Hemeria. The book documents the aftermath of war in Kobane and the lives of civilians returning to rebuild their homes.

The lecture was organised by professors Nidzara Ahmetasevic and Catherine Norman Tahirovic.
